Kidney Stones & Endourology
Specialist treatment for kidney and ureteric stones
Mr Kucheria has extensive experience in the management of both straightforward and complex stone disease, including patients who have previously undergone unsuccessful treatment or have large or multiple stones.
Conditions treated
-
Kidney stones
-
Ureteric stones
-
Large and complex kidney stones
-
Staghorn stones
-
Multiple renal stones
-
Obstructing stones
-
Recurrent stone disease
-
Acute renal colic
-
Infected or obstructed urinary systems
-
Recurrent stone formation
-
Metabolic abnormalities causing recurrent stones
Procedures
-
Flexible ureteroscopy & laser lithotripsy (RIRS)
-
A minimally invasive treatment in which a flexible telescope is passed through the urinary tract into the kidney. Stones are fragmented with a laser and, where appropriate, removed.
-
-
Ureteroscopy & laser treatment
-
Used particularly for stones in the ureter, allowing the stone to be treated without an external incision.
-
-
Shockwave lithotripsy (SWL)
-
A non-invasive treatment that uses focused shockwaves to fragment suitable kidney or ureteric stones.
-
-
Ureteric stent insertion and removal
-
Used to relieve obstruction, protect the urinary tract following stone surgery or facilitate subsequent treatment.
-
Complex & Recurrent Kidney Stone Disease
Some patients require more than simply removing an individual stone
Mr Kucheria has a particular interest in complex stone disease, including:
-
Large renal stone burden
-
Multiple kidney stones
-
Recurrent stones
-
Stones associated with obstruction
-
Patients requiring staged or combined procedures
-
Patients with previous unsuccessful stone treatment
Treatment is tailored according to stone size, number, location, composition, anatomy, kidney function and previous procedures.
Where appropriate, the aim is to achieve the highest possible stone-free rate while minimising the number of procedures required.
Enlarged Prostate & Aquablation
Modern treatment for benign prostate enlargement
Mr Kucheria has a particular interest in the treatment of benign prostatic enlargement (BPH) and the urinary symptoms it can cause.
Symptoms may include:
-
Weak urinary stream
-
Difficulty starting urination
-
Straining to urinate
-
Urinary frequency
-
Urgency
-
Getting up repeatedly at night
-
Feeling that the bladder has not emptied
-
Urinary retention
-
Recurrent urinary infections caused by obstruction
Aquablation Therapy
Aquablation is an advanced minimally invasive robotic treatment for benign prostate enlargement.
It uses a real time tailor made plan using live prostate imaging and then executed by a robotic high-pressure water jet to remove obstructing prostate tissue without relying on heat.
It can provide a durable improvement in urinary flow and symptoms and is an important treatment option for appropriately selected men.
Mr Kucheria assesses each patient individually to determine whether Aquablation or another treatment is most appropriate.
Other prostate procedures
Depending on prostate size, anatomy, symptoms and individual circumstances, treatment options may include:
-
TURP
-
Laser prostate surgery
-
Rezūm
-
Bladder-neck procedures
-
Other endoscopic treatments
The aim is not simply to offer a particular procedure, but to identify the most appropriate treatment for the individual patient.
Other Urological Conditions
Although kidney stones, endourology and prostate surgery are major areas of specialist interest, Mr Kucheria also assesses and treats a broad range of adult urological conditions.

Why Choose a Specialist Stone Surgeon?
Kidney stone treatment is not simply about removing a stone.
The most appropriate treatment depends on where the stone is, how large it is, how many stones are present, the anatomy of the kidney and ureter, previous treatments and the patient’s individual circumstances.
Mr Kucheria’s specialist interest in endourology and complex stone surgery allows treatment to be planned around these factors, with minimally invasive approaches used wherever appropriate.
His academic work includes research into supine PCNL, complex renal stones, ECIRS, emergency ureteroscopy and the cost-effectiveness of definitive treatment for ureteric stones.
Specialist Areas
Kidney Stones
Diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of kidney and ureteric stones.
Complex Stone Disease
PCNL, supine PCNL and ECIRS for large, multiple and staghorn stones.
Endourology
Advanced minimally invasive treatment using ureteroscopy, laser technology and percutaneous techniques.
Aquablation
Advanced water-jet treatment for men with troublesome symptoms from benign prostate enlargement.
General Adult Urology
Assessment and treatment of bladder, prostate, urinary tract and men’s health conditions.
Evidence-Based, Minimally Invasive Urological Care
Mr Kucheria combines extensive clinical experience with an active interest in urological research and advances in minimally invasive surgery.
The objective is simple: accurate diagnosis, an appropriate treatment plan and the least invasive effective treatment wherever possible.
